Stinger Medical launches successful integration
of integriti Vitals® to ECLIPSYS® Sunrise
for Springhill Medical Center

(Nashville, TN., September 15, 2008) -- Stinger Medical, a leading provider of mobile solutions and point-of-care technologies, has partnered with Springhill Medical Center and Eclipsys Corporation® to automate the capture and documentation of patient vital signs data. In this joint venture, Springhill clinicians will use Stinger Medical's integriti Vitals® system to acquire a patient's vitals signs and wirelessly transfer the data directly into their hospital information system, Eclipsys Sunrise.

Springhill Medical Center, a 252-bed acute care facility in Mobile, Alabama, activated the Eclipsys Sunrise Clinical Manager™ module in 2004 to provide complete patient information to clinicians at the point-of-care. For the last few years, Springhill has been desired to close the loop on their real-time clinical documentation by adding a reliable vitals application that would allow their clinicians to capture and document patient data into Sunrise without leaving the bedside.

integritiConsisting of the integriti device to automate the capture of vital signs, and the integriti Vitals interface engine, integriti Vitals is the industry's first point-of-care wireless vitals signs system to send the results directly into a hospital's electronic health record (EHR). Stinger Medical's project team partnered with Eclipsys Corporation to provide Springhill Medical Center with a software interface solution that provides the automated transfer of vital signs results from integriti Vitals into their patient records in Sunrise.

David Denise, Senior Director of IT at Stinger Medical, describes how his project team designed the integriti Vitals interface for Springhill to include 'context sharing' with Sunrise. "Context sharing is a process that allows integriti Vitals to share security and patient identification direct with Springhill's EHR," explained Denise. "Context sharing works well for clinical users because it completely eliminates the need for any manual entry or bar coding of patient identification. It also does not require a manual log-in every time clinicians need to capture and document patient vitals."

In addition to context sharing, Springhill had another request of Stinger: to leverage the integriti Vitals interface by using observation sharing from their existing interfaces. Stinger's flexibility to accommodate observation sharing saved Springhill's IT team significant time from reinventing the interface.

Stinger's integration project team also invested time to understand Springhill's needs from a clinical workflow perspective. "Our goal wasn't to change their clinical flowsheet but simply to integrate to the observations they were already using," said Denise. "Integriti Vitals is fully customizable to capture any specific modifiers already on the clinical flowsheet today." Springhill's clinical staff recognized how easy it was to integrate integriti Vitals into their daily workflow. Being able to implement a new vitals application without changing the clinical flowsheet was a big contributor to driving clinical acceptance and full utilization.

pull_quoteSpringhill's clinical staff has also been very receptive to the easy learning curve required to use integriti Vitals. A short lesson of only 5-10 minutes to train clinical staff on integriti Vitals gives clinicians everything they need to know to immediately use it to document patient data at the bedside.

Since the integration of integriti Vitals with Sunrise, Springhill's clinicians aren't the only ones to experience the benefit of real-time vitals documentation. From the moment the integriti Vitals interface went live, Springhill's physicians now have fast, easy access to the most current patient vitals data whether they are in the facility making rounds or remotely checking on a patient. The benefit of integriti Vitals realized by physicians is a significant, measureable improvement to the entire Springhill organization.

3 key elements in the integriti Vitals-Sunrise integration include:

  • Context Sharing: Clinicians launch the integriti Vitals application directly from Sunrise. Sunrise then passes patient and clinician information to integriti Vitals. Context sharing completely eliminates the need for manual entry or bar coding of patient identification.
  • Interface/Observation Sharing: IT can leverage observations used in existing interfaces (i.e.: bedside monitors, ventilators, etc.) This is a significant time saver for IT workload and the overall time lapse for the interface live launch.
  • Clinical Flowsheet Continuity: Clinical workflow varies by hospital and caregivers become very familiar with the flowsheet they use daily for patient care. When implementing integriti Vitals to a new hospital floor or department, Stinger's goal is to minimize any change in workflow for caregivers. Integriti Vitals is fully customizable, designed to capture the specific patient data you require and match the workflow in which your clinicians are accustomed.
